Judo
Judo (translated as "the gentle way") is a Japanese martial art and combat sport founded by Dr. Kano Jigoro in 1882. Judo, derived from the ancient Japanese art of the samurai known as Jujitsu, is one of the most popular sports in the world. Judoka (Judo practitioners) pride themselves on their ability to throw much stronger, heavier opponents with minimal effort and can just as easily subdue their opponents on the ground through the use of joint locks, pins, and chokes. Whether you are looking to get into better shape, learn self-defense, compete, or lighten the stress from classes, Rutgers Judo provides a healthy environment for anyone to train and improve. From Kano's original style of judo, multiple forms have evolved such as Brazilian Jujitsu and Russian Sambo. Many judo practitioners have used their knowledge of grappling (ne waza) and standup grappling (tachi waza) to compete in mixed martial arts. Some famous MMA fighters holding black belts in Judo include Anderson Silva, Vitor Belfort, Renzo Gracie, and Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira. ![]() The Rutgers University Judo Club is led by Sensei Roberto Chinen. Sensei Chinen is not only a 4th Dan in Judo, but also a fierce competitor. Sensei Chinen started his Judo career at the age of 5 years old in Argentina and began competing in Judo in 1974. He finished his competitive career in 1993 after winning multiple championships in various divisions (including absolute divisions which have no weight classes) at the state, national, pan-american, and international level. Sensei Chinen also served as a representative for Judo in Argentina for Adidas from 1979 to 1991.
